Conchita Wurst

Conchita Wurst is an Austrian singer, the drag persona of Thomas “Tom” Neuwirth (born 6 November 1988 in Gmunden, Austria). In 2007, Tom participated in the Austrian casting show Starmania, finishing 2nd and subsequently becoming a founding member of the short-lived boyband Jetzt Anders!. In 2011, Neuwirth first appeared as Wurst, taking part in Die große Chance, coming in 6th place. In 2012, Wurst made her first attempt to compete at Eurovision, taking part in the Austrian national final with the song That’s What I Am, coming in 2nd.

In late 2013, Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that they had internally selected Conchita to represent Austria at the 2014 Eurovision in Copenhagen. With the song Rise Like a Phoenix, Conchita qualified from the second semi-final and went on to win the contest, Austria’s first win since the 1966 contest. Following her win, Conchita became a big campaigner for LGBT rights, going on to meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Conchita eponymous debut album will be released on 15 May, and at the 2015 Eurovision in Vienna she will also take on the role of the green room host.
